Dr. Dorafshar earned undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Manchester School of Medicine, He completed a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at UCLA and a combined general surgery and plastic surgery residency at the University of Chicago. He honed his expertise in craniofacial surgery and microsurgery during a fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and international fellowships in Mexico, Taiwan, and Tokyo.

While on the Johns Hopkins faculty, Dr. Dorafshar co-directed the Facial Transplantation Program, led the Craniofacial Fellowship, and in 2012 helped lead a team that performed a groundbreaking face transplant surgery. He also served as director of the Department of Plastic Surgery Residency Cosmetic Clinic.

Dr. Dorafshar later served as the John W. Curtin, MD, Endowed Chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago where he oversaw the plastic and reconstructive surgery residency programs and co-directed the microsurgical and gender affirmation fellowship programs.

Currently he is the President and CEO of Evolve Your Life and serves as Chief of Plastic Surgery at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Illinois.

His postgraduate education began with an internship in general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and internal medicine in Manchester, UK. Driven by a deep interest in surgical innovation, Dr. Dorafshar completed a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at UCLA, California, followed by a combined general surgery and plastic surgery residency at the University of Chicago. He further specialized in craniofacial surgery and microsurgery with a fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, and pursued several international fellowships in Mexico, Taiwan, and Tokyo, enriching his expertise and global perspective on surgical practices.

During his extensive tenure at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Dorafshar held multiple leadership and academic roles within the Departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Neurological Surgery. He co-directed the Facial Transplantation Program and led the Craniofacial Fellowship, significantly advancing research and clinical practices in plastic surgery, craniofacial reconstruction, and microsurgery. Dr. Dorafshar was a leading surgeon on the team that performed a groundbreaking face transplant surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2012. He was also a key surgeon in a rare, complex pediatric surgery that significantly reduced the size of a boy’s extremely large head at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore in 2012.

Following his impactful tenure at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Dorafshar served as the John W. Curtin, MD, Chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he played a crucial role in the department’s growth and expansion. He also held several key positions at Rush, including Vice Chairman of Academic Affairs in the Department of Surgery and Professor of Neurological Surgery. Additionally, Dr. Dorafshar co-directed the Microsurgical Fellowship, significantly contributing to the education of the next generation of surgeons and was instrumental in establishing the Gender Affirmation Surgery Program and Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center.

Leadership and Awards

Dr. Amir Dorafshar’s exceptional combination of technical expertise, commitment to surgical innovation, passion for academic medicine, influential leadership roles, and compassionate patient care has garnered him numerous accolades and recognition at local, national, and international levels.

In March 2012, Dr. Dorafshar made history as a leading surgeon on the team that performed the world’s most extensive face transplant at the University of Maryland Medical Center and R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. The 36-hour operation restored the face of a Virginia man who had lost much of his face in a gun accident. Dr. Dorafshar was honored with Senate Resolution 667 (Senate of Maryland) and House Resolution 437 (Maryland House of Delegates) awards for leading the multidisciplinary team of surgeons completing the most extensive full-face transplant to date. In 2013, he received the Shock Trauma Hero Award from the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Dorafshar’s leadership and excellence in education, combined with his commitment to mentoring, earned him the 2018 Faculty Teaching Award from The Johns Hopkins & University of Maryland Plastic Surgery Training Program. His pioneering work in reconstructive surgery and full-length article on “Total Face, Double Jaw, and Tongue Transplantation” earned his paper the James Barrett Brown Award from the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the Best Normal Case Award from the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the Best Clinical Paper Award from the American Society of Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Dorafshar has held numerous leadership positions, including Co-Director and Surgical Leader of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Facial Transplantation Program and Surgical Co-Leader of the University of Maryland School of Medicine Facial Transplantation Program. He has played key roles in many pivotal research and clinical trials that have significantly shaped the field of surgery. Dr. Dorafshar’s leadership extends to active involvement as an expert reviewer for numerous professional journals, including the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, ePlasty, the Annals of Surgery, PLOS ONE, Craniomaxillofacial Trauma and Reconstruction, the Journal of Surgical Oncology, and Head and Neck Surgery.

Beyond his direct clinical and academic roles, Dr. Dorafshar has also made significant contributions to the field of plastic surgery through his leadership and active participation in various institutional and national committees including the Surgical Chairs Council Committee, the Research Oversight Committee for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Leadership Development Committee for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the American Association of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Dorafshar is active in several professional medical organizations. In recognition of his outstanding work in the field of surgery, he was nominated in 2023 to serve as a Contributing Editor for the prestigious Plastic and Reconstructive Journal and nominated to serve as a member of the Advisory Committee to the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
