Neck Lift

A neck lift is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the visible signs of aging below the jawline.

Neck Lift

As we age, our neck undergoes significant changes. The skin produces less collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles, creases, and sagging. The muscles under the jawline can loosen and form neck bands, while fat deposits can accumulate under the chin and neck, altering the neck’s contour. These changes typically become noticeable around the age of 40.

A neck lift is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the visible signs of aging below the jawline. It is performed through a small incision under the chin, where the neck is undermined, excess fat is removed, and the submandibular glands (salivary glands) may also be removed. The neck muscles are tightened, and the skin is re-draped over them to enhance the neckline without removing excess skin. This results in a more youthful, contoured, and rejuvenated appearance.

About the Procedure

Why is a Neck Lift Done?

A neck lift, also known as neck rejuvenation, is performed to address a variety of concerns, including:

  • Excess fat under the chin (double chin).
  • Neck bands, which are visible vertical lines that appear on either side of the neck as we age.

Although a neck lift reduces the signs of aging in the neck and can take many years off a person’s appearance, it cannot change the fundamental appearance of the neck or stop the aging process.

How Long Does a Neck Lift Last?

The results of a neck lift can last a long time and although it doesn’t stop you from aging, it helps you look younger as you age. The longevity of the results depends on various factors, including your skin quality, how well you care for your skin, sun exposure, age, lifestyle, genetics, and habits such as smoking and drinking. Following post-operative care instructions diligently is crucial. Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle can further prolong the results of your neck lift.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?

Most healthy individuals without significant medical conditions are suitable candidates for a neck lift. Ideal candidates are those who:

  • Have visible signs of aging in the neck area, such as a double chin, and/or anterior neck bands.
  • Are bothered by the signs of aging in the neck region.
  • Are physically healthy and do not have medical conditions that can impair healing.
  • Have a positive outlook and specific, realistic goals for improving their appearance.
  • Are non-smokers or willing to quit smoking for a significant period before and after surgery.
  • Are willing to practice good skin care post-surgery.

Patients who are not good candidates include those who smoke or have complex medical conditions that can impair healing after surgery.

How to Prepare for Neck Lift Surgery

Preparing for a neck lift begins with a consultation with Dr. Dorafshar and our team, who will take a holistic approach to achieve harmony and balance in your overall appearance. During your consultation, we will evaluate your general health, review all your medications including prescriptions, herbal supplements, and over-the-counter drugs, and discuss your medical history and skin type.

We will also address any concerns you might have about the surgery, examine and measure different parts of your face and neck, take photographs, and discuss the likely outcomes of your surgery, as well as possible risks and complications. You may need to undergo lab testing and adjust or stop taking certain medications that can increase the risk of bleeding. Smoking cessation is crucial, and it’s recommended to quit well in advance of the surgery date. Maintaining an active lifestyle, a healthy diet, and limiting alcohol intake are important as these factors can significantly impact the healing process.

What Happens During the Surgery

The goal of a neck lift is to carefully remove excess fat and tighten the muscles around the neck area. Sometimes, submandibular glands (salivary glands) may be removed. Depending on the procedure that is right for you, you may be given general anesthesia or intravenous sedation to ensure your comfort. There are several methods that can be used depending on your anatomy, skin flexibility, and desired outcome. The surgeon may make a small incision under the chin to minimize visible scarring. Surgical options also include liposuction, which removes excess fat but does not correct structural problems. An extended neck lift, sometimes combined with a facelift, is another option for more comprehensive results. During the procedure, where appropriate, the surgeon will reposition the tissues and muscles, and secure the new position of the neck. The incisions are then closed with sutures and/or skin adhesives. Drains are placed under the skin to reduce bruising and swelling. The exact process of your surgery will depend on several factors, which will be discussed during your consultation.

How Long Does It Take?

A neck lift usually takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on the specific techniques used and whether any additional procedures are performed simultaneously.

Risks of a Neck Lift

While a neck lift is generally safe, it does carry some risks. These include scarring, changes in skin sensation, asymmetry, hematoma (accumulation of blood under the skin), infection, bleeding, nerve injury, prolonged swelling, and complications from anesthesia. However, these risks are rare and typically temporary, resolving as the healing process progresses.

Benefits of a Neck Lift

The benefits of a neck lift are significant, offering an improved appearance of the neck, reduced neck bands, and enhanced self-confidence and overall facial harmony. The procedure aims to rejuvenate the neck, creating a more rested and youthful look. By removing excess fat, it effectively reduces loose, hanging skin, wrinkles, resulting in a smoother, more youthful contour. A neck lift does not remove skin. The effects of a neck lift are long-lasting, particularly when combined with a healthy lifestyle and skincare routine.

Recovery after a Neck Lift

Recovery from a neck lift typically takes a few weeks and involves several stages. Swelling and bruising are most pronounced during the first few days, gradually subsiding over the following weeks. During the first week, it’s crucial to keep your head elevated while lying down to minimize swelling and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing. If prescribed medications, take them as directed.

By the second week, swelling and bruising should begin to subside, allowing patients to resume light activities. By the third and fourth weeks, most individuals can return to their normal activities, but should avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise. Within one to three months, the final results become more visible, and patients can fully return to their routine activities. Short-term side effects may include numbness, discomfort around the incisions, and tightness or tingling in the neck area.
