Eyelid Lift
An eyelid lift, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove or reposition excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids.
As we age, our eyelids naturally stretch, and the muscles surrounding them weaken. This leads to the accumulation of excess skin and fat around the eyes, resulting in sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, bags under the eyes, and sometimes, impaired peripheral vision. An eyelid lift, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove or reposition excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. This surgery significantly enhances the overall appearance of the eyes, making you look more rested and rejuvenated. An eyelid lift can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both, depending on individual needs.
Blepharoplasty is performed to address a variety of eyelid concerns, including:
The results of blepharoplasty are generally long-lasting and provide noticeable improvements for many years, even as the aging process continues. Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, along with protecting your skin from the sun, can help prolong the benefits of your surgery.
Most healthy people with no serious eye conditions or significant medical issues are appropriate candidates for an eyelid lift. In general, good candidates:
Patients who are not good candidates include people with dark circles caused by reasons other than the eyelids, smokers, and those with certain eye conditions.
The process begins with a consultation with Dr. Amir Dorafshar and his team. We will discuss your goals, review your medications and medical history, and address any concerns you may have about the surgery. A thorough physical examination, including tests that measure your vision and tear production, may be required. Certain medications and supplements may have to be stopped or adjusted prior to surgery. You will also want to maintain a healthy diet, get plenty of rest, avoid smoking, and limit alcohol, as they can impact the healing process. Make sure you have someone to drive you home after the procedure and to stay with you for at least the first night.
Upper blepharoplasty alone can be done in the office under local anesthesia. When combined with lower blepharoplasty, the procedure is best done as outpatient surgery where the patient is typically put under general anesthesia. Once the patient is comfortable, the surgeon will make tiny discrete incisions in the natural creases of the eyelid or inside the eyelid. From the incision, the surgeon will remove excess skin and fat responsible for the eyelid problem, as well as strengthen saggy skin and muscles. This results in more youthful eyelids.
Immediately after surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery room. Most patients can go home the same day with detailed discharge instructions. It is important to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night. You will also have follow-up appointments to monitor your healing process and remove any stitches.
Every patient is different, and the time to complete the surgery varies. However, most surgeries typically last between 45 minutes and 3 hours, depending on whether both upper and lower lids are being treated. Additional time may be needed if the procedure is combined with other cosmetic surgeries, such as a facelift or brow lift.
As with any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, dry eyes, irritated eyes, difficulty closing eyes, scarring, changes in vision, and anesthesia risks. Most of these risks are rare and temporary and should resolve as healing progresses.
Blepharoplasty can significantly enhance your quality of life. Most patients enjoy more confidence, improved vision, and a more youthful, rested look and appearance after surgery.
Mild swelling and bruising are common right after surgery and typically subside within 10-14 days. Cold compresses can help reduce these symptoms. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and smoking for several weeks after surgery. It is also important to protect your eyes from the sun and wind. Use prescribed eye drops to prevent dryness and infection. Although the initial healing will occur within a few weeks, full recovery and the final results may take some months to become apparent. Regular follow-up visits with Dr. Dorafshar will ensure that your eyes remain healthy, and the results are maintained over time.
How painful is blepharoplasty?
Pain is typically minimal and can be managed with prescribed medication. Most patients report discomfort rather than significant pain.
Will there be visible scars?
Scars are usually well-hidden within the natural folds of the eyelids and fade over time. Dr. Dorafshar uses advanced techniques to minimize scarring.
Can I wear contact lenses after surgery?
You can usually resume wearing contact lenses after about two weeks, once initial healing has occurred. Until then, you may need to wear glasses.
How soon can I return to work?
Most patients return to work within 10-14 days, depending on the nature of their job and their individual healing process. Jobs that involve heavy lifting or strenuous activity may require a longer recovery period.
Are the results permanent?
While aging continues, the results are long-lasting, often a decade or more. For many patients, the improvements are considered permanent. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environmental exposure can influence longevity of the results.
Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Yes, blepharoplasty is often combined with other facial procedures such as a facelift or brow lift for a more comprehensive rejuvenation. Combining procedures can provide harmonious results and a more youthful overall appearance.
What should I avoid after surgery?
After surgery, avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks. Wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and limit sun exposure. Avoid smoking as it can delay healing and increase the risk of complications. And most importantly, follow all post-operative instructions to ensure optimal healing and results.
Blepharoplasty can be complemented with other cosmetic procedures for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. These may include brow lifts, facelifts, botulinum toxin, and fillers.
