The Short Answer

A brow lift repositions a descended or heavy brow to a higher, more youthful position. An eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) removes excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Many patients benefit from both.

What Is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift (forehead lift) surgically elevates the eyebrows and smoothes forehead wrinkles. As we age, the brow descends due to gravity and loss of skin elasticity, which can cause a heavy or hooded appearance in the upper eyelids, deep forehead wrinkles, frown lines between the brows, and a tired or stern expression.

Types of brow lift techniques:

  • Endoscopic brow lift: Minimally invasive, small incisions behind the hairline; most common today
  • Temporal brow lift: Lifts the outer (lateral) brow, often combined with facelift
  • Direct brow lift: Incision directly above the brow; used selectively for men

What Is an Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)?

  • Upper blepharoplasty: Removes overhanging upper eyelid skin that may cause hooding or visual obstruction
  • Lower blepharoplasty: Addresses under-eye bags, puffiness, and fine wrinkles beneath the eyes

Key Differences at a Glance

Feature Brow Lift Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)
Target Eyebrow position & forehead Eyelid skin and fat
Addresses Forehead Wrinkles? Yes No
Addresses Under-Eye Bags? No Yes (lower bleph)
Affects Brow Height? Yes No (may reveal brow descent)
Recovery 2–3 weeks 1–2 weeks

How Do You Know Which One You Need?

A simple test: push your brows upward gently with your fingers. If the hooding in your upper eyelids improves dramatically, your heaviness is primarily from brow descent — a brow lift may be your primary solution. If excess skin remains regardless of brow position, upper blepharoplasty is the answer. Many patients need both.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a brow lift or an eyelid lift? Gently push your brows upward — if upper eyelid hooding improves dramatically, brow descent is likely the cause, and a brow lift may be your primary solution.

Can a brow lift and eyelid lift be done together? Yes, many patients benefit from combining both procedures for complete upper-face rejuvenation.

Which has a shorter recovery, brow lift or eyelid lift? Eyelid lift recovery (1 to 2 weeks) is typically shorter than brow lift recovery (2 to 3 weeks).
