The Short Answer

Botox relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles (from facial expressions). Dermal fillers add volume and structure to areas that have deflated or developed deep static lines. They work in completely different ways and are frequently used together.

What Is Botox?

Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A, a purified neurotoxin that temporarily blocks nerve signals to specific facial muscles. When injected, targeted muscles relax — smoothing the overlying skin and preventing the facial movements that create or deepen wrinkles.

Botox treats: forehead horizontal lines, glabellar lines (’11s’), crow’s feet, bunny lines, lip lines, chin dimpling, neck bands, excessive sweating, and jaw slimming. Other neurotoxin brands include Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, and Daxxify (which lasts up to 6 months). Results typically last 3–4 months.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Fillers are injectable substances that physically add volume, plumpness, or structural support to the face. The most widely used are hyaluronic acid (HA) gels.

Fillers treat: nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lip volume and definition, cheek volume loss, under-eye hollowing (tear troughs), jawline and chin definition, and temple hollowing. Results last 6 to 24 months depending on product type and injection area.

Downtime None Minimal
Used Together? Yes, frequently Yes, frequently

Do You Need Botox, Fillers, or Both?

Most patients benefit from both. Botox addresses upper face wrinkles from movement (forehead, eyes, glabella). Fillers address mid- and lower-face volume loss, deep folds, and lips. Together, they provide a more complete facial rejuvenation than either alone — commonly called a 'liquid facelift.'

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get Botox and fillers on the same day? Yes, many patients combine both in a single visit — sometimes called a ‘liquid facelift’ — for more complete rejuvenation.

Which lasts longer, Botox or fillers? Dermal fillers generally last longer (6 to 24 months) compared to Botox and other neurotoxins (3 to 4 months, up to about 6 months with Daxxify).

Does Botox treat volume loss? No, Botox only relaxes muscles that cause movement-related wrinkles; fillers are needed to restore lost volume.
