This female patient presented with significant excess skin and subcutaneous tissue in her upper arms, commonly referred to as a “bat wing” deformity. This condition was a direct consequence of massive weight loss, causing her considerable aesthetic concern and limiting her clothing choices, particularly during warmer months.
Following a thorough consultation with Dr. Dorafshar, the patient expressed a strong desire to improve the appearance of her arms. After a detailed discussion of available surgical options, she elected to undergo a comprehensive treatment plan involving circumferential liposuction of the arms combined with a longitudinal brachioplasty.
The surgical approach involved liposuction to address the excess subcutaneous fat circumferentially around the upper arms, followed by a brachioplasty procedure. During the brachioplasty, Dr. Dorafshar meticulously removed the redundant skin and underlying soft tissue through a longitudinal incision placed strategically on the inner aspect of the arm. This careful placement of the incision was crucial to ensure that the resulting scar would be as inconspicuous as possible.
Post-operatively, the patient experienced an uneventful recovery. She expressed immense satisfaction with the outcome of the combined procedures. The reduction in arm circumference and the elimination of the sagging skin significantly improved the contour of her upper arms. As a result, she reported feeling much more comfortable and confident in wearing summer attire and engaging in activities without self-consciousness regarding the appearance of her arms. This case highlights the effectiveness of combining liposuction and brachioplasty in addressing the challenges of post-massive weight loss deformities, leading to significant improvements in patients’ aesthetic appearance and quality of life.
