What Is Labiaplasty and Who Is a Candidate for the Procedure?

QUICK ANSWER

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces or reshapes the labia minora and/or labia majora. It is performed for functional reasons (chronic discomfort, irritation, or hygiene challenges from enlarged labia) and for aesthetic reasons. The procedure is done under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia and typically takes one to two hours.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty involves the surgical reduction, reshaping, or reconstruction of the labia — the folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening. The most common procedure is reduction of the labia minora (inner lips), though the labia majora (outer lips) may also be addressed. Labiaplasty is one of the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures in the United States.

At Evolve Your Life in Chicago, Dr. Amir Dorafshar approaches labiaplasty with careful attention to both functional outcomes and aesthetic goals, ensuring results that are comfortable, proportionate, and natural-looking.

Why Do Women Consider Labiaplasty?

Functional reasons

Enlarged or asymmetrical labia minora can cause chronic irritation, chafing, or discomfort during exercise, cycling, intercourse, or while wearing tight-fitting clothing. Some women experience difficulty with hygiene. In these cases, labiaplasty directly improves quality of life and may qualify for insurance consideration.

Aesthetic reasons

Many women seek labiaplasty for personal aesthetic preferences — to achieve greater symmetry, reduce visible protrusion, or improve self-confidence in intimate situations. Aesthetic labiaplasty is not covered by insurance but is available with financing at Evolve Your Life.

Post-childbirth changes

Childbirth can stretch or tear the labia, resulting in asymmetry or enlargement that was not present before pregnancy. Labiaplasty can restore a more comfortable and proportionate appearance.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?

  • Adults who are in good overall physical health
  • Non-smokers or those who can stop smoking before surgery
  • Women experiencing physical discomfort from enlarged labia
  • Those with aesthetic concerns that affect confidence or quality of life
  • Those who have completed childbearing, or who understand that future deliveries may affect results
  • Those with realistic expectations — labiaplasty improves comfort and appearance; results vary by anatomy

What Techniques Are Used in Labiaplasty?

Trim method

The most straightforward technique: excess tissue is removed from the outer edge of the labia minora. This produces a linear scar along the new edge. It is simple and effective but does not preserve the natural pigmented border of the labia.

Wedge method

A V-shaped section of tissue is removed from the middle of the labia, and the remaining edges are sutured together. This preserves the natural pigmented border and is preferred by many surgeons for its more natural aesthetic result. Dr. Dorafshar selects the technique best suited to each patient’s anatomy and goals.

What Is Labiaplasty Recovery Like?

  • Days 1–7: Swelling, mild discomfort, some bruising. Ice packs and prescribed medication help.
  • Week 1–2: Rest from strenuous activity. Loose clothing is important.
  • Week 4–6: Normal activities including exercise and sexual activity typically resume.
  • 3–6 months: Final result fully visible as all swelling resolves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will labiaplasty affect sensitivity or sexual function?

When performed by an experienced surgeon, labiaplasty should not negatively affect sensation. Many patients report improvement in comfort during intimacy as a result of reduced physical discomfort from the labia.

Is labiaplasty covered by insurance?

Insurance may cover labiaplasty when documented functional symptoms (pain, chronic irritation, hygiene issues) are present. Purely aesthetic labiaplasty is not covered. The Evolve Your Life team can advise on documentation and coverage exploration.

How long does labiaplasty surgery take?

Labiaplasty typically takes 60 to 90 minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

Will there be visible scarring after labiaplasty?

Scars are present but placed in the natural contours of the labia and are typically not visible. They fade significantly within six to twelve months.

Can labiaplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Labiaplasty is sometimes performed as part of a mommy makeover or in conjunction with vaginoplasty, clitoral hood reduction, or other feminine rejuvenation procedures. Dr. Dorafshar will discuss the full range of options during consultation.
